Undeniably 2013 was the best year for music, but this year has some promising new material from longtime favorites and even brand new projects. Here are just a few picks from the very long list of new music to look out for in the coming months.
Of Mice and Men
The band’s third full length, ‘Restoring Forces,’ is due to release Jan. 28. OMAM have so far released two songs off of the album and it’s safe to say this is going to be a tough album to judge. ‘You’re Not Alone’ is not the sound that the band has hinted toward after their last EP. Austin Carlile’s voice sounds like it is tired and in need of a major break, the lyrics are mediocre, and it overall seems that this is a clear product of commercialized overhaul. But their other single, ‘Bones Exposed,’ has to be the best the band has sounded. It is nice to hear Aaron Pauley’s voice intertwined with Carlile’s and the guitars are on fire. This album could be their biggest mistake or the next step into becoming one of the biggest metal core bands around.
You Me At Six
Expected to drop in February ‘Cavalier Youth’ will be the fourth album for this British pop-punk group. The first single off the record ‘Live and Lie’ is the same solid sound that we can expect from the band, but it is nice to hear how much the group has matured over the years. Their last album ‘Sinners Never Sleep’ was a forced to be reckoned with, and hopefully the band produced material that will blow that all away.
Taking Back Sunday
The original members of the legendary pop-punk band reunited a few years ago and now it’s time to see what all that time apart has to offer. The band is set to release their sixth album early in 2014. The band hit the studio with producers Marc Hudson and Ray Jeffery. On their last tour TBS preformed a new song ‘Flicker Fade.’ The song shows the mature sound of not only Adam Lazzrara’s voice, but also the style of the entire band. TBS is just one of those bands that could make an album only using things found in a kitchen and it would still be amazing.
Pierce The Veil
After releasing their first tour documentary, Pierce the Veil announced that they would be heading back to the studio to record their fourth album. ‘Collide With the Sky,’ the bands last album, was just one of those records you couldn’t seem to take out of the cd player in your car. It was the most solid the band has sounded and it showed just how far the quartet has really come. There is no word of when we will get a taste of what is in store for this album, but there isn’t a single doubt that it will be another one for the records.
Better known as one of the talented guitarist for disbanded legends My Chemical Romance, Frank Iero has decided to venture out on his own. This isn’t Iero’s first project away from the band, but this is his first solo release. He was featured on the soundtrack for the film ‘Frankenweenie’ as a solo artist, and to be truthful it sounded pretty great. Iero has a great voice and is vastly talented. It will be interesting to see what his brilliant mind has turned up with.
After what seemed like the biggest and shocking band member change Craig Owens has returned to his rightful place at the vocalist for Chiodos. When that announcement was made fans instantly started to ask when new material would be ready at the click of a button. Well fans you’ll have to wait a little bit longer. The album is said to drop in March. No word of when in March, but hey at least we have a month. During the European leg of the Vans Warped Tour the band started playing a new song ‘Behvis Bullock.’ This is undeniably the heaviest the band has ever sounded. It’s nice to hear Owen’s voice soar above the chaos of the guitars and drums. This is may be the most anticipated album of this year so far.
Spencer Chamberlain, formerly of Underoath, and Stephen Bowman have teamed up to create Sleepwave. They have played a few local festivals and started to catch the eye of not only UO fans, but also anyone that has two ears and enjoys great music. Their first single ‘Rock And Roll Is Dead And So Am I’ is worth a listen and can be downloaded for free here. This Florida band is on the rise and is definitely on our radar. Their first album is said to be released in the spring.
